You Were Mine

Disclaimer: Don't own the Gundam characters or the song. The children are my own creation and the social worker is the real deal.

Warnings: Relena's insane fantasies and delusions. Kinda angsty if you're a Relena sympathizer.

Notes: I heard this song in the car and decided to get back at Relena for 'The Hardest Thing'. It just had to be done. And it works so nicely! A sad song with a happy twist. I changed all the she's in the song into he's.

//I can't find a reason to let go
Even though you've found a new love
And he's what your dreams are made of//

Relena stared out of a window into the gray dreary day. She used to hate days like these. She used to love the sunshine. Until Heero walked out on her. It had been a beautiful day, the sun was shining, birds were singing, skies were blue and life was perfect. Until he handed her the envelope with divorce papers in it and walked out the door. He walked out the door and straight into the arms of Duo Maxwell.

Somehow she had always known. Some little part of her knew that Heero didn't love her, but even to this day, when Heero's waking and sleeping dreams were filled with Duo, Relena denied it. Heero had always dreamed of Duo. At night he'd sigh that name. And now Heero could finally live his dream and be with his love. But until she died Relena would deny them still. Heero loved her!

//I can't find a reason to hang on
What went wrong can be forgiven
Without you it ain't worth livin' alone//

Relena looked away from the window back to her desk, which was filled with paperwork. Since the day Heero left she didn't get a thing done. All of her documents spilled out of one basket and her mail was running all over the floor. Relena walked across the room and slumped into an overstuffed chair. She picked up her teacup and drank her cold tea and took her anti-depressants. Not that they were doing her any good but she had nothing better to do. She looked across the room at her giant portrait of Heero, which adorned a full wall of her office.

"Oh Heero," she sighed. "I'll forgive you if you come back. I know it's not your fault. That Duo is just a sick man through and through. I still love you Heero. I know that you love me too. But without you're cold stony presence I'm only barely holding on."

//Sometimes I wake up crying at night
And sometimes I scream out your name//

Relena shot upright in bed.

"Heero!" she screamed. She felt the tears pouring down her cheeks. "Heero," she cried out into the darkness pitifully. She drew her knees up to her chest and rocked back and forth in the bed.

//What right does he have to take you away
When for so long you were mine//

Relena slowly calmed down. Her eyes hardened as she stared into the darkness. This was all Duo's fault! It was all his fault. He had no right to take her Heero away from her. He was hers first. She saw him first. Heero was hers! She had him for so long and then that Duo waltzes back in with his braid flying and steals her husband away.

//I took out all the pictures of
Our wedding day
It was a time of love and laughter
Happy ever after//

Relena turned on the lights and picked up a giant photo album that was sitting on the nightstand. She opened the book and looked at the large wedding portrait. She was dressed in a beautiful white gown beaded with perfect round seed pearls and sparkling with diamonds. She wore a gold crown with lots of expensive gemstones. She was the Queen of the World after all. She beamed up at the camera. Heero had been dressed in a black tux. He stood stiff as a rod and glared black death at the cameraman.

On the next pages were pictures of the wedding party. Dorothy had been her maid of honor. Noin and Lady Une were bride's maids. Duo had been Heero's best man. The other Gundam pilots stood behind Duo in their suits. None of them looked too happy. In fact in lots of pictures Duo seemed to be crying. Nah, boys don't cry. Relena continued to flip through pictures of her most happy day.

//But even those old pictures have
Begun to fade//

Maybe it was just her imagination, but the people didn't look as happy as they should. Her wedding was a happy and joyous occasion right? So why did most of the guests look like they were at a funeral? The colors were all muted and people's expressions were sympathetic. Hmm, must be age. The pictures were fading and loosing their quality. Her wedding had been wonderful, everyone was happy.

//Please tell me he's not real
And that you're really comin' home to stay//

If she closed her eyes, she could see Heero walking through the door into the bedroom. He'd come in and strip to his boxers and undershirt and lay in the bed facing away from her. She could forget that Duo Maxwell even existed. He was just make believe and she had her darling Heero here with her.

Relena looked down at the wedding album and flipped through a few more pages. A loose picture flew out of the book and fluttered onto her lap. She picked it up and looked at it. It was a picture of Heero and Duo. Heero was dressed in his tuxedo and sitting on a bed. Duo knelt on the floor before him and hugged Heero's waist. Duo was crying as he looked up at Heero. Heero was cradling Duo's face gently in his hands as he kissed Duo's forehead. A single tear dripped from Heero's eye.

Relena tore the picture in half. Duo Maxwell was a figment of her imagination. Or nightmares rather.

//I can give you two good reasons
To show how you love's not blind
He's two and she's four and you know
They adore you
So how can I tell them you've changed
Your mind//

Relena answered the insistent ringing of the doorbell. A tall blonde woman in a business suit stood at the door with Heero and Duo standing behind her.

"May I help you?" Relena asked the woman.

"Are you Relena Peacecraft?" the woman asked.

"Yes I am, and you are?" Relena asked.

"My name is Vanessa Ceisler and I'm with Social Services. I'm here collect your children and their belongings." The woman said handing Relena a business card.

"What?" Relena asked confused.

"It's very simple." The social worker said. "You received a letter with a court date on which you were to appear to contest the custody of your children. You didn't show up and the state decided that custody of the children should go to their father and his life partner."

"That can't be!" Relena said.

"I'm afraid so ma'am, now if you'd please step aside so we can collect the children." the social worker requested.

"I will not!" Relena said indignantly.

"Daddy!" a childish voice squealed out. A small four year old girl flew out the door brown braids flying out behind her.

"Hanna!" Heero smiled picking her up and swinging her in the air. He kissed her on the cheek as he hugged her tightly.

"Daddy I missed you!" Hanna said.

"I missed you to baby," Heero said smiling.

As Relena watched Heero and her daughter she failed to notice a baby toddle past her legs and out the door.

"Dwo!" the small boy gurgled.

"Logan!" Duo said rushing forward to scoop up the baby.

"Dwo!" Logan giggled.

Duo bounced the small boy who giggled happily. Relena watched in shock as Heero and Duo doted over the children.

"Daddy, you're not gonna leave 'gain are you?" Hanna asked.

"No baby. You and Logan are going to come live with me and Duo," Heero said.

"Really?" Hanna asked looking at her father with large blue eyes.

"Really," Heero confirmed.

"Yay!" Hanna exclaimed. "Duo you'll play tea with me? And dress up and make-believe?"

"Yes Hanna I'll play with you," Duo nodded.

Hanna cheered again. Heero put her down and she ran off into the yard. Duo chased after her with Logan wrapped safely in his arms. Relena stood on the doorstep, watching Duo play with her children. She was so preoccupied that she hardly noticed when Heero and the social worker slipped into the house to retrieve the children's things. She was still standing on the doorstep when they all packed into the cars and drove off.

The last thing she heard was Duo asking, "Who wants ice cream?"

//I remember when you were mine//

Relena sat all alone in the little white room wrapped in the new white jacket the nice doctor had given her. This wasn't the accommodation that the 'Queen of the World' was used to but it would do. She was alone, but she wasn't. Heero was with her. He loved her. He didn't take her children to go live happily ever after with Duo. No. Her Heero loved her. Heero was hers'. Not Duo's. Hers'.

The End

Well, that's all folks. Like I said a sad song but it had a nice happy twist when you put it that way. I really didn't feel like torturing poor Duo and Relena was a perfect target for this one! Anyway, comments please!!!
