The Next Generation

Okay...some people say we read too much into the interaction between characters to find our yaoi...I say I don't know what they're talking about! My little brother is only twelve, he doesn't know I write yaoi and yet tonight he shocked the heck out of me with this wonderful revelation. I just bought the Earthian DVD collection, which is heavily shonen ai and has a makeout scene in it between the two main characters Chihaya and Kagetsuya, both male of course if you didn't already know. So anyway, halfway through the first episode my brother says of Kagetsuya, "He really cares for him [Chihaya]" I just nodded and continued watching. He eventually left to go play his newly acquired n64 game and soon after started getting ready for bed. So I'm all alone when the nice little makeout scene between Chihaya and Kagetsuya comes on (in the third episode, Angelic Destroyer), then suddenly my brother pops around the corner and stares at the screen.

He looked at me real funny then said "Wait, wait, I thought they were both guys?!"

"They are," I replied grinning to myself.

"I don't get it!"

"Well its a little thing called...they're gay," I explained...somewhat mockingly ^_^

"DUDE! In all the animes the guys are gay!" He exclaims throwing himself on the couch.

I started laughing really hard remembering when we watched DBZ, the one where Krillin was feeling up an unconscious Vegeta and my brother provided a yaoi laden voiceover which eventually revealed that Trunks was also checking out Vegeta's butt and thought he was hot. I nearly died when he did that! Anyway I eventually collected myself enough to ask him to explain.

"Well in Outlaw Star Jim and Gene are always flirting...ON DBZ Trunks is a pervert and on Gundam Wing Heero knocks out Duo and put him over his shoulder with a hand on his butt, like Trunks (I think he meant Krillin)," he said demonstrating the hold. "They do that on Superman too!...But what is it with these Japanese cartoons?!"

I had my hands covering my face as I alternately laughed and hyperventilated.

Shaking his head, he went off to bed. I immediately got up and ran in search of a pad and pen. I was halfway there when he popped up again and said, "And don't write that down!" (which I had done during his little voice over and do frequently while watching television....yeah I take notes, ya got a problem with that?!) I fell down..anime style ^_^ I slid to the floor because of my socks and I hit my knee. I barely noticed though since I was laughing so hard.

On top of this I also know that on several occasions other anime/yaoi fans have mentioned the fact that their younger siblings have pointed out poingant shonen ai moments on shows such as Pokemon and Digimon (most especially Digimon and the famous Matt cradling Tai scene which caused a stir, although I'm sure the Ash cradling Gary had a similar effect.) So nobody can tell me that all these kids are wrong because sometimes children can be more perceptive then adults (not us of course since we're looking for it ^_^) but their parents probably never notice the fact that their children are watching shows full of such interesting tension and content. So there is hope for our next generation...of yaoi fans and of tolerant human beings ^_^...Hurray for humanity! Long live anime and yaoi!
